A Historic Finale in Hungarian Sectorball NB I

Recent years have produced many memorable moments in Hungarian Sectorball, but it is no exaggeration to say that the finale of the 2024 National Championship NB I was one of the most thrilling endings in the competition’s long history — a history that has been written since 1962.

On November 8, spectators who visited the Community House in Komló witnessed an extraordinary final round, as the fourth and decisive stage of the season was played. After the first three rounds, three teams had each claimed one round victory: Vasi, DÖKE, and Testvériség. Going into the final stage, they stood at 61, 58, and 55 points respectively — already a clear sign that an exceptional showdown was approaching.

The battle was not only intense at the top. In the lower half of the table, teams were separated by just a few points, meaning that every single match carried enormous significance — promotion, survival, or relegation could be decided by the smallest margins.

Drama on All Fronts

Just minutes after 5 p.m., before the final round began, the standings were incredibly tight. While the spotlight was firmly on the title race, other crucial duels were unfolding simultaneously.

One of them was the Testvériség II vs Vác encounter. The two teams had split their previous three meetings 2–1 in favor of Testvériség II, meaning that Vác still had a chance to overtake their rivals. Meanwhile, the “Mundial” team could only watch, as their final position depended entirely on other results.

Szeged’s hopes also rested partly on external factors: they trusted not only their own performance, but also that Kecskemét — having already secured survival — might ease off slightly.

In the end, the tension delivered. Komárom fulfilled their expected task against the already relegated Komló reserve team with a 5–3 victory. The Testvériség II–Vác match turned into a classic: two draws on the top tables, a win apiece on the others, and an overall 4–4 draw. This created a tie for the crucial 8th place.

The final decision came down to head-to-head results between Vác and Szeged II across the season. With results of 6–2, 6–2, 3–5, and now 4–4, Vác emerged on top — securing their NB I status. As a result, the two Szeged teams will swap divisions next season, while remarkably, two independent Vác teams will compete in the top division next year.

The Title-Deciding Super Clash: Vasi vs Komló

All eyes then turned to the match everyone had been waiting for: Vasi vs Komló, a true Sectorball super derby. There could be no tie-break calculations here — the hosts needed an outright win to reclaim the championship title they had lost the previous year.

What followed was a clash worthy of the very best in Hungarian — and world — Sectorball. It was a pity that the sectorball.hu YouTube channel could not provide a live broadcast, as fans would have witnessed a spectacular display of elite-level play.

For Vasi, the lineup featured Gábor Farkas Jr., György Pákai, István Debreczy, and István Mártonfi. Komló responded with Elemér Fülöp, Tibor Szendrey, János Trecskó, and István Major.

Two tables ended in deadlock:

  • Pákai vs Szendrey: 1–1
  • Mártonfi vs Major: 0–0

On the remaining tables, the drama peaked. Trecskó defeated Debreczy 1–0, meaning that a draw on the first table would have handed Komló the championship. Under immense pressure, Gábor Farkas Jr. delivered a crucial 2–1 victory, sealing an overall 4–4 draw.

That single result was enough.

Champions Once Again

With the tied match result, Vasi successfully defended their national championship title, concluding one of the most dramatic seasons in Hungarian Sectorball history.

Both divisions of the National Championship have now concluded — but after a finale like this, one thing is certain: the story will continue next year.
